Jesus Taught His Disciples (Part 1)

Jesus taught His disciples (those who were committed to following Him) what it meant to be His disciple. He gives a series of “blessed’s” or promises that will fully come to fruition when Jesus returns for the people of God. But these blessed’s/promises will certainly alter the life of those who are following King Jesus while here on earth. It will alter their life in four ways based on Matthew 5:1-6. Those who are following Jesus will be poor in spirit. They will mourn over their sins and the sins of others. They will exude a meek posture towards others. They will urgently desire to pursue righteousness.

Scripture: Matthew 5:1-6

You are Blessed

New leadership always brings a new set of values. Jesus chose His 12 Apostles, and from the start He lets them know that there are some values they will need to give up and new values they must pick up. There are things about life they will have to unlearn. Jesus’ coming is the handwriting on the wall for the kingdom of the world. He is bringing in a new kingdom and it’s values are completely counter to the way the world seems to work. If we are going to follow Jesus, then we have to recognize that what looks like the blessed life in this world may in reality be a curse.

Scripture: Luke 6:17-26; Daniel 5; Col. 1:13, 3:2-3
