Remembering 9/11 From Genesis to Revelation

Genesis 3 is the infamous account of Adam and Eve choosing to rebel against God’s Word, whereby a number of horrible consequences came forth (Genesis 3:14-21). Adam and Eve chose not to trust in God, but rather they chose to believe the lie that God was shorting them of something they needed or rightly deserved. In essence, they were playing the role of God. Revelation 21 is the glorious passage where we read the Apostle John describing a new heaven and new earth. It’s where Jesus tells us that He will make all things new. Life as we know it is lived between the historical devastating reality of Genesis 3 and the anticipated awesome reality of Revelation 21; Christians long for a day when the effects of sin are finally put to death.

This Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of 9/11. It was a tragic day for the United States—most of us who were adolescents or older remember the exact place we were when we saw the planes hit the towers, as well as the Pentagon and a field in rural Pennsylvania. It’s a day that is forever seared in our minds. This notorious event begs the question for Christians: what should we think about this event and how should we respond? Here are five reminders and exhortations for Christians as they seek to remember 9/11 (to read the full article go here).

  1. We should remind ourselves of our vulnerability and frailty, even as Americans.
  2. We should pause to pray for the families who lost loved ones on that fateful day.
  3. We should work to promote the kind of unity we experienced on 9/11.
  4. We should remember that evil will always exist until Christ comes.
  5. We should be filled with gratitude for the leaders who have protected us.
