Jesus, in another confrontation with the Scribes and Pharisees condemns empty religion and commends true faith. The big idea in this scene is that what defiles us cannot be resolved by simply washing our hands and watching what we eat. We need a new heart. Here we find: A hard question for Jesus about tradition; A hard question for pretenders about God’s Word; and finally, Offending Empty Religion for the sake of True Faith.

Scripture: Matt. 15:1-20; Ex. 20-21
