Paul uses Abraham’s two sons to illustrate two ways people relate to God: slavery through self-effort or freedom through grace. Ishmael represents trying to earn God’s approval through good works and law-keeping, while Isaac represents trusting in God’s promises fulfilled through Jesus Christ. The Galatian believers were being tempted to add works to their faith, but Paul warns this leads to spiritual slavery. True freedom comes from admitting our neediness, expecting opposition from religious people, purging legalistic messages, and standing firm in Christ’s finished work. We must resist the urge to control circumstances and instead wait patiently on God’s promises with empty hands.
