The tenth plague, the death of the firstborn, is the one God uses to break Pharaoh’s grip on His people and set them free from Egyptian bondage. But this time, Israel had to act in order to be protected from God’s judgement – they had to apply the blood of a spotless lamb to the doorposts of their houses. God establishes the Passover as a memorial for Israel, to remember God’s deliverance for them from slavery and death through the blood of the lamb. Jesus is our Passover Lamb, whose sacrifice provides for our salvation from sin and death. The Lord’s Supper, per Jesus, replaces the Passover for the Church, as the memorial of His sacrifice for our sins.
