Proverbs 4 delivers a bold and urgent message: only one path in life actually leads to life, and that path is God’s wisdom. Solomon passes down to his son the same wisdom he received from his father David, showing that wisdom is meant to flow from one generation to the next. The chapter unfolds in three movements: choose wisdom, stay on wisdom’s path, and guard your heart. Choosing wisdom is not about adopting a set of principles. It is about choosing Jesus Christ, who is the wisdom of God. Staying on the path means walking consistently in the right direction, one step at a time, through a lifelong process of growth and transformation. Guarding the heart is the foundation of it all, because everything we feel, think, say, and do flows from the heart. Jesus walked the righteous path perfectly and, through His death and resurrection, makes it possible for us to be forgiven, given a new heart, and placed on the path of life.
