John 3:22-36 reads like 3:1-21. It begins with a conversation and ends with comments from John. In the first, it’s Nicodemus and Jesus, in this text it’s John the Baptist and his disciples. The “greatest man born of a woman,” according to Jesus, John is a bold prophet who is also full of humility. He corrects his disciples’ envious attitudes as more and more people move away from John and toward Jesus.

And then John the Apostle comments showing the supremacy of Jesus over John, and in fact all other prophets, as God’s Son, His beloved Son, who utters God’s very words, into whose hands the Father has given all things, who has the Spirit without measure, and who, if you believe Him, you will receive eternal life, but if you disobey Him, you will not see life but death.

And so, the ultimate decision John continues to press into his readers: What will you do with Jesus? Will you receive His testimony, believe Him, obey Him, or will you disobey, remain in unbelief, and reject what He says?
