In Matthew 5:21-48 Jesus repeats a phrase, “You have heard it said, but I say to you,” and uses everyday examples to show us that true kingdom life comes from a heart transformed by Him. In Matt. 5:31-37, Jesus deals with marriage and our words. He shows us that his disciples, salt and light in the world, honor the covenant of marriage, and speak and live so truthfully and reliably that no promises are necessary.
