Matthew 3 introduces us to “the Voice,” John the Baptist, whom God sent to announce the coming of the Savior King, the Messiah. John’s coming is not a coincidence, but the fulfillment of not one, but two prophetic promises. John’s message was simple, direct, universal, and urgent. He warned about the deadly, damning nature of spiritual self-sufficiency, and called the people to repentance, as he introduced “the One who is to come.”
